The Art of the Grip

MAY 15, 2026 · 6 MIN · EDITORIAL

Two practitioners in a grip-fight at the start of a roll.

The opening seconds of a roll are not random. They look fluid because they happen fast — but every grip you take is a vote against an alternative you ruled out.

Study the people who win in the first thirty seconds. They are not faster. They are pre-deciding. The grip is the visible part of a calculation that started before they stepped on the mat.

What follows is a working framework for grip-fighting that we use in the gym, refined across three years of competition video and notes from the partners in the Atelier Sigma capsule.
